SIXTY years ago this week, behind securely locked factory doors, Britain’s biggest car company was readying a revolutionary new product. The Mini was being born. The all-new vehicle turned everything the workers were accustomed to on its head. The production lines at Longbridge, Birmingham, and Cowley, Oxford rolled at a snail’s pace as they gingerly assembled 20 of these strange little cars each day.
